Major Bridge on Gambhir Nallah, Jammu

Project Overview

Majalta region had only seasonal connectivity across Gambhir Nallah, with road access interrupted during monsoon flows, affecting daily mobility, emergency access, and movement of goods. 

To establish a reliable, all-weather link, a motorable bridge was planned on the Majalta Link Road. Translink Infrastructure Consultants Pvt. Ltd. was appointed to carry out the detail design of the bridge.

Challenges

The narrow valley geometry restricted access for carrying out conventional sub-soil investigation across the full width of the channel, making it difficult to capture continuous geotechnical profiles. The required pier height (approximately 45 m) introduced sensitivity to slenderness and lateral forces, necessitating careful control of stability and dynamic behavior. 

Additionally, seasonal flow conditions demanded reliable hydraulic and scour design to protect foundations and approaches.

Solutions

Translink adopted hybrid investigation approach. In addition to carrying out sub-soil investigation, soil parameters were calibrated through comparative correlation and design of similar adjacent sites. Pier sizing, reinforcement, and footing embedment were optimized using stability and lateral load performance checks. 

Deep foundations were designed with required safety against scour and lateral displacement. Scour-resistant foundation levels, channel-side protection layers, and approach drainage controls were incorporated to mitigate erosion and ensure structural resilience.

Impact

The bridge enables year-round vehicular movement on the Majalta route, improving accessibility for local communities and regional services. The structural design and foundation detailing enhance durability and resilience in a challenging topographic and hydrological setting. 

The solution balances constructability, long-term performance, and safety in a valley environment, supporting reliable connectivity and reduced travel interruptions.
