Ultimate Potential

Gandhidham–Mundra Section, NH41, Gujarat

Project Overview

The Gandhidham–Mundra section of National Highway 41, approximately 71 km in length, forms a critical logistics link between the industrial hub of Gandhidham and Mundra Port, one of India’s largest maritime gateways. The corridor facilitates major freight movement supporting the western logistics ecosystem and port-based industries in the Kutch region.

Translink was appointed by NHAI to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the six-laning of this corridor. The assignment included alignment finalization, geometric and pavement design, cost estimation, and preparation of bid documents for implementation under HAM mode.

Challenges

The project experienced multiple design and operational challenges due to heavy multi-axle port traffic, congestion, and pavement distress. Widening within the existing right-of-way required median-side expansion, demanding careful traffic staging to maintain continuous port access.

Coastal terrain with high sub-soil water levels and saline conditions further complicated drainage and durability design.

Solutions

A six-lane configuration with median-side widening was adopted to optimize existing assets while minimizing land acquisition. Geometric improvements and access control measures were integrated to enhance safety and traffic flow.

Advanced digital tools for geometric consistency, pavement modeling, and construction simulation improved precision and efficiency. Environmental and social assessments were conducted per MoRTH guidelines to ensure long-term compliance and sustainability.

Impact

Upon implementation, the upgraded corridor will substantially enhance freight efficiency and reduce travel time between Gandhidham, Mundra, and hinterland industrial nodes. It will improve safety and connectivity for port-linked logistics, support regional economic development, and reduce emissions through smoother traffic flow.

As the DPR is under approval, these benefits will be realized upon construction and commissioning of the project.
