Ultimate Potential
Monorail Mass Transit System in Chennai required a pre-bid ridership assessment to guide investor decision-making and support bid preparation.
Translink was appointed to evaluate expected travel demand along the planned corridors, reviewing network behaviour, commuter patterns, and the likely role of the monorail within the broader urban mobility system.

The ridership estimation had to be developed with limited finalized design details and evolving corridor alignments, requiring careful interpretation of available planning inputs. Chennai’s complex travel patterns, influenced by mixed land uses and competing transport modes, added difficulty in isolating the monorail’s specific demand potential.
The pre-bid timeline also required rapid consolidation of historical data, growth indicators, and network interactions.
Translink adopted a approach using available demographic, land-use, and network information to build a clear demand picture despite constrained inputs. Travel behaviour and mode-shift tendencies were analysed through comparative mobility patterns, supported by calibrated assumptions suited to early-stage corridor planning.
The results were refined through sensitivity checks to provide a balanced and defensible ridership outlook for bid considerations.
The study gave client a clear understanding of potential ridership, revenue expectations, and corridor behaviour at the pre-bid stage.
This supported informed bid strategy, reduced uncertainty around demand assumptions, and helped the client position a competitive submission aligned with the corridor’s likely performance.
