Ultimate Potential
The Radhanpur–Chanasma stretch acts as a key connector for local traffic and regional movement. For its rehabilitation, Translink was engaged for detail design within a framework that required milling of the existing surface followed by a fresh overlay.
The assignment focused on strengthening the pavement, improving ride quality and ensuring resource-efficient rehabilitation aligned with contractual requirements.

The project was called for full milling of the specified depth and reconstruction of the bituminous layers, which results in discarding a large volume of material that still held structural value. Developing a rehabilitation plan that remained compliant with the contract yet minimised material wastage required careful assessment of existing layer properties and a balanced design approach.
Establishing uniformity across the corridor while adopting a more sustainable material strategy shaped the primary technical considerations.
Translink introduced a reclaimed asphalt pavement design to integrate the milled material into the new bituminous layers. This allowed the rehabilitation to retain the contractually mandated milling and overlay sequence while reducing the demand for entirely fresh material.
The pavement layers were designed with appropriate blend proportions to ensure structural reliability, consistency along the corridor and smooth incorporation of recycled asphalt.
The adopted design enabled the corridor to be rehabilitated with better material efficiency, reduced wastage and lower overall consumption of new bituminous mixes.
The strategy improved ride comfort, strengthened the pavement for the forecasted traffic and delivered a more sustainable rehabilitation outcome for the corridor.
